    As the hangar doors open, the curious spectators push forward and the giant nose of an aircraft slowly emerges into view, the years of planning and work for the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental have come to fruition: the “new jumbo” is celebrating its official unveiling today, 13 February, in Seattle — a first highlight in the life of this new aircraft.

    This elegant aircraft is 5.6 metres longer than its predecessor, the Boeing 747-400 and approximately one metre longer than the Airbus A340-600 — to date the world’s longest airliner. The performance data is impressive too: it will be able to carry 22 tonnes more in load capacity than the B747-400 and has a range of more than 14,000 kilometres. With the B747-8 Intercontinental emissions can be reduced sustainably by around 20 per cent compared with earlier models. Fuel consumption is significantly less than that of comparable models currently in operation.

    The new aircraft owes much to ideas generated by Lufthansa — and it is an ideal fit with Lufthansa’s fleet: with around 380 seats, the Intercontinental will slot in perfectly between the Airbus A380 (536 seats) and A340-600 (306 seats).

    Right from the start Lufthansa know-how influenced the design of the B747-8. The modernised cockpit follows the same concept as that of the Boeing 747-400 and the Boeing 787 which means that, for example, existing flight simulators can still be used and pilot retraining requires less time.

    The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental boasts many innovations. These include a newly developed wing with an ultra-modern wing profile and newly developed raked wingtips instead of winglets. The aerodynamic benefits these bring significantly reduce fuel consumption.

    The aircraft also has completely newly developed engines (the GEnx-2B67) manufactured by GE Aviation. These not only burn less fuel and generate fewer emissions than current generations of engines, they are quieter too.

    Lufthansa has placed firm orders for twenty 20 Boeing 747-8 Intercontinentals and has options on a further twenty.
    The first test flight26.04.2011
    The fuselage is white, the tail fin is blue. But the logo on the tail and the lettering on the fuselage are still missing. Lufthansa’s first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, with the future registration D-ABYE (”Yankee Echo“), completed its first flight today, Tuesday, 26 April. The aircraft took off from Paine Field Airport in Everett, which is also home to Boeing’s factory, at 09.26 hours, local time. During its three hour and 20 minute flight, the new jumbo climbed to an altitude of 8,534 metres and reached a speed of 509 kilometres per hour.

    The first flight marks the start of a five-month-long flight testing stage during which Boeing will rigorously test the cabin configuration. The air-conditioning, oxygen supplies for passengers and crew, the in-flight entertainment system, the smoke detectors and the robustness of the cabin cladding are just a few of the many points the US aircraft manufacturer will check during some 300 flight hours. However, manoeuvres that push the aircraft to its operating limits as part of certification are no longer in the programme. Such tests were successfully completed by the B747-8F freighter version and then by the red-painted B747-8 Intercontinental prior to the official unveiling of the new airliner on 13 February 2011.

    After the flight tests, “Yankee Echo“ will return to the Boeing plant in Everett, about 50 kilometres north of Seattle, to be readied for delivery in early 2012. All four engines, the brakes and tyres as well as the complete cabin cladding, carpeting and washrooms will be renewed.

    Lufthansa was the world’s first airline customer for the passenger version of the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental. In December 2006, the airline placed orders for 20 of the new jumbo jets and secured options on a further 20 of the ‘Dash-eight’.

    Boeing has not only lengthened the new jumbo by 5.6 metres, but also equipped it with the latest technologies, with completely new wings and GEnx-2B67 engines from GE Aviation. As a result, fuel consumption is significantly lower than on the long-haul aircraft in service up to now. Compared with the ‘classic’ B747-400, the new jumbo reduces operating costs by 30 per cent. CO2 emissions and noise are reduced significantly.

    Why Lufthansa ordered
    the 747-8    01.03.2008
    Pilots call it the ‘Queen of the Skies’, passengers know it as the jumbo jet: it is the Boeing 747, one of the world’s most successful long-haul aircraft. The last 747-400 left the Boeing production halls in Everett in 2005. But the legend would live on — in the form of a further development to be known as the Boeing 747-8 International. That was the decision reached by Boeing’s management — and Lufthansa played a decisive part in it. The new jumbo jet would initially be built as a freight version and then later made available as a passenger aircraft. Lufthansa made a major contribution to the design of this new aircraft.

    Lufthansa was the first airline in the world to order the 747-8 passenger version. In December 2006 the airline order 20 of the new jumbo jets and secured options on a further 20 ‘Dash-eights’.

    It was unthinkable that Joe Sutter, known as the “father of the jumbo jet”, would not attend the contract signing between Lufthansa and Boeing. The 90-year old former Boeing engineer could hardly conceal his justifiable pride. For him the decision to develop a new Boeing 747 with the extra designation ‘Dash-8’ meant something like “eternal life” for the aircraft developed under his leadership.

    But emotions only played a supporting role in the decision to allow the Boeing 747 to live on in a third generation. The generally held view in the aerospace industry is that decisions about new aircraft always demand reliable foresight on the part of both manufacturers and airlines.

    At Lufthansa the pros and cons of a new aircraft had already been weighed up well in advance. “We invest in research and the latest technology, and drive innovations forward. The decision to modernise the fleet is the largest investment in new aircraft in our company’s history and will be a big step forward on the way to the ‘3-litre aircraft’. As a result we will decouple the volume of transport and emissions”, says Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

    Whether it is Boeing or Airbus, there is a great deal of Lufthansa know-how in many of the aircraft produced by both these manufacturers. The airline’s knowledge and experience of flight operations, customer requirements and technical innovation are greatly appreciated by the major aircraft manufacturers. The fleet management departments cooperate closely with the manufacturers and so help to develop the aircraft of the future.

    “That was also what happened when we started having our first ideas about the Boeing 747 ‘Dash-eight’”, explains Dr. Karl Echtermeyer of the Group Fleet Strategy and Aircraft Assessment department, who is responsible for the 747-8 development project. “However, the crucial thing for us is that we operate as a team”, he adds. “Even the idea for the Boeing 747-8 was not that of one individual, rather it originated and was developed here in the team.”

    “We negotiate as equals with the engineers and managers at the large international aircraft manufacturers; everyone understands his or her opposite number and accepts the other’s arguments”, says Echtermeyer. Together with the major aircraft manufacturers, the Lufthansa experts develop the next generation of aircraft and get innovations off the ground. And today, those responsible must already be considering what the next decade’s aircraft should look like, because that is roughly the period of time from the initial idea right through to the series production of a commercial aircraft. For example, Lufthansa was already in possession of the first plans for the wide-bodied Airbus A380 in the mid-1990s, yet the aircraft will only go into regular service with Lufthansa in 2009.

    The Group Fleet Strategy and Aircraft Assessment department, therefore, is always looking far into the future. The team must reconcile customer wishes, economic viability and environmental factors in advance and express these requirements in good time to the aircraft manufacturers. Future-oriented thinking – that is what is called for here. Thus, in the mid-1990s, Lufthansa was already considering the possibility of a 3-litre aircraft, although at that time the price of kerosene was a third of what it is today.

    “We needed an aircraft for our fleet which would fill the gap between the Airbus A340-600 which has about 310 seats, the Boeing 747-400 with about 360 seats, and the Airbus A380 which has around 200 more seats”, explains Karl Echtermeyer. There was no such aircraft on the market and a complete new development was also not to be expected. And so the idea of further developing the tried and tested Boeing 747 was born. “The simplest solution would have been stretching the aircraft fuselage; there were and are plenty of examples of that”, says Echtermeyer. But the Lufthansa team wanted more. And so the new jumbo was not only lengthened by 5.6 metres, it also got completely new wings and state-of-the-art jet engines.

    When it comes to aircraft engines, in particular, there have been considerable improvements in recent years. As a result, fuel consumption has been significantly reduced; operating costs have been cut by 30 per cent and CO2 emissions lowered by 16 per cent. The noise emissions are even 30 per cent lower than those of the ‘classic’ 747. About 420 airline passengers will be carried on board the 747-8 on long-haul flights to Asia or North America – and the aircraft will be more efficient too.

    Besides the passenger version, there will also be a 747-8 freighter. The new 747-8 freighter will also retain the classic Boeing feature, the swing-up nose cargo door, which makes it easier to load bulky goods.    New thrust for the Jumbo01.03.2008
    Whether an aircraft is economical and, above all, environmentally-friendly or not essentially depends on its jet engines. Their own weight alone already influences fuel consumption. Large aircraft engines weigh up to eight tonnes. A weight saving of just 250 kilograms per engine can save the environment from 0.8 tonnes of CO2 on a flight from Frankfurt to New York — because of the lower flight weight about 260 kilograms less kerosene will be used. This was taken into consideration by Boeing (and Lufthansa) when they thought about the further development of the tried and tested jumbo jet, the 747-400.

    The designers benefited from the fact that for the latest product in the Boeing family — the twin-engine long-haul aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner — completely new jet engines had been developed by the engine manufacturer GE Aviation. These should also provide the new 747-8 with the necessary thrust and, at the same time, considerably reduce the fuel costs compared with the old model. That would have been the ideal scenario. “But it wasn’t quite that simple”, explains Dr. Karl Echtermeyer, whose team at Lufthansa supervised the development of the new 747 in dialogue with Boeing.

    The thrust and the fan diameter of the latest General Electric GEnx engines are too big for the B747-8. That is a problem, because when installing the new jet engine sufficient ground clearance has to be maintained. Although this disadvantage could have been compensated for by a higher undercarriage, these changes would have set off a chain reaction of further alterations to the aircraft’s basic construction, which would have been almost as expensive as a completely new design.

    The engineers benefited from experiences from the past. When, at the beginning of the 1980s, the successful Boeing 737 was further developed, they had faced a similar problem with the then newly-developed and considerably more efficient CFM56 jet engine. This engine also had too large a diameter to be attached to the wings of the 737. As a result, the bottom parts of the engine nacelles were flattened, the result was engine inlets flattened at the bottom which were typical of the new Boeing 737 models. With the latest generation jet engines for the Boeing 747-8, the inlet nacelles will not be flattened, but rather the diameter will be reduced overall. Thus, the reduced thrust of the modified GEnx will correspond with the thrust requirements of the new 747-8.

    A further visible innovation provides the jet engines with a greater degree of effectiveness: the sabre-like, curved jet-engine vanes, the geometry of which is derived from the latest findings of fluid mechanics. The 747-8’s new jet engine also has a visually striking and highly effective element at its rear end: the saw-toothed trailing edge, known as the ‘chevron nozzle’. This innovation mixes the hot exhaust gases with the cooler outer air more smoothly, so reducing the turbulence that creates noise. The noise level of the B747-8, not only when cruising, but also when landing or taking off, will be significantly below the level of today‘s Boeing 747-400. That is demonstrated, for example, by the noise footprint of the 747-8 I, which when taking off is about 30 per cent below the values of the lighter 747-400.
    The ‘Queen of the Skies’

    Even aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh was involved in the design of the Boeing 747. Lindbergh twice met Joe Sutter, the father of the jumbo jet, in order to learn more about the work on the 747. There was a good reason for this, because at the time the ocean-crossing aviator Lindbergh had a great deal of influence in the American aviation industry and was a close friend of Juan Trippe, the legendary founder of the American airline Pan American World Airways (Pan Am). The headstrong Trippe wanted to have a large aircraft, “possibly the largest aircraft in the world”, for his airline in order to be ahead of the competition. That was at the end of the 1960s. On 9 February 1969 what was then the world’s largest commercial jet aircraft took off for the first time and eleven months later the first Boeing 747 entered scheduled service with a flight from New York to London. The aircraft became a fantastic success, both for manufacturer Boeing and for countless airlines worldwide.

    Some forty years later it is again a leading airline, this time Lufthansa, which is encouraging Boeing to redesign the successful wide-bodied aircraft in an enhanced version as the Boeing 747 ‘Dash-8 Intercontinental’. The original 747 had already been produced many times in ever new versions as a result of improvements. The ‘Queen of the Skies’ - as the Boeing 747 was admiringly referred to – kept up with the times and that evidently holds true for the latest generation too.

    At the same time there were many difficulties to overcome before the first jumbo jet saw the light of day. Boeing engineer Sutter remembers the first demands which Pan Am made of the aircraft manufacturer in Seattle: “The numbers which they mentioned sounded enormous”. In fact, the airline managers wanted to transport more than twice as many passengers in an aircraft than would have been possible in a Boeing 707, the aircraft used in those days for long-haul flights. This meant a tremendous leap forward. In contrast, the difference between a Boeing 747-400 and what is currently the world’s largest commercial aircraft, the Airbus A380, appears rather minor.

    But how to accommodate so many passengers? Although it was possible to consider oversized aircraft thanks to the new jet engines developed by General Electric and Pratt & Whitney, a final concept still did not exist. Simply putting two fuselages on top of each other was the most obvious solution. But there were a number of reasons against this, such as the complicated loading of the upper deck and, above all, the evacuation of the passengers in an emergency.

    So Joe Sutter and his team decided in favour of the one-deck variant, which extended right through to the end of the fuselage at the front. They shifted the cockpit over it on top of the fuselage. This arrangement had the great advantage that in the freight version of the 747, the bow (or nose) could simply be opened upwards as a freight flap. It was also the origin of the ‘hump’, the prominent distinguishing feature of the first jumbo jets.

    Depending on the airline configuration, there was room to seat 350 to 500 passengers. The seats were installed in a so-called three-four-three arrangement with two aisles. That has remained so to this day.

    A whole series of Boeing 747 versions followed. As early as 20 months after the maiden flight of the 747-100, a modified model, the first 747-200 took off. It had larger fuel tanks and a higher take-off weight of 378 tonnes. The basic 747-200B was for passengers, the 747-200F for freight.

    On 26 April 1970, Lufthansa was the first European airline to start long-haul scheduled services with the new jumbo — and in doing so entered into a new dimension in aviation. With its fuel tanks full, the gigantic aircraft weighed 322 tonnes and seated 361 passengers.

    As soon as you enter the giant, wrote one journalist at the time in a Hamburg daily, you get into “a champagne mood”. One thing was particularly remarkable: the service operated much better — for the benefit of the passengers, but also of the cabin crews. For the first time in a commercial aircraft there were two aisles between the rows of seats.

    On Lufthansa’s maiden flight LH 404 from Frankfurt to New York there was another world premiere: the first showing of a film on board a jumbo jet which, at the same time, was the world premiere of the film ‘Erinnerungen an die Zukunft’ (‘Chariots of the Gods’) based on the book by Erich von Däniken. There was also something for the music fans on board: they could select the music of their choice from seven audio channels.

    A further, much-noticed special feature was the spiral staircase in the front section of the aircraft which led up to the First Class lounge. On the maiden flight from Frankfurt to New York the passengers broke into spontaneous applause as the aircraft began to move and then took off. Another version of the Boeing 747 appeared in 1973. A number of airlines wanted the ‘giant bird’ to be able to fly further. Now the jumbo was shortened — by 14.35 metres to be precise. But as a result, the entire tail including the complete control unit had to be modified, which in the final analysis caused the rather peculiar line of the aircraft. The 747 SP (Special Performance) was born. The aircraft could now cover extremely long distances. With a seating capacity of 271 in the standard version, the prototype took off on its maiden flight on 4 July 1975.

    During the 1970s, economic factors became increasingly important to the airlines. This also had an impact on the requirements for the technical equipment on aircraft. While Lufthansa was already involved in the planning of the B747-100, it now played a considerable part in the development of the Boeing 747-400 as the first airline to place an order for it.

    A major contribution was made by Lufthansa’s long-standing Chairman, Jürgen Weber, who at the time was responsible for aircraft development at Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg. Together with other airlines, he was able to convince Boeing about the concept of a new ‘jumbo generation’.

    Reinhard Abraham, formerly responsible for engineering on the Lufthansa Group Executive Board, was the driving force behind one of the most important changes: the introduction of the modernised cockpit. The installation of digital systems resulted in the first two-man cockpit for the jumbo jet. All the essential data for flight and system monitoring was presented on six large screens. The number of displays, instruments and switches in the cockpit could be reduced from 1,000 to fewer than 400.

    The more advanced Super Jumbo, with the extra designation ‘Dash 400’, rolled out of the assembly hall in Everett near Seattle on 26 January 1988. Technical know-how and more than 20,000 engineer-hours had contributed to this further development.

    The most important innovations, besides the two-man cockpit, included: an extended upper deck, which meant an increase in capacity of around 20 seats and improved aerodynamics thanks to a wingspan that was 5 metres longer, with 1.80-metre-high, vertical side wings on the wingtips, the so-called ‘winglets’. As a result, the fuel consumption was reduced considerably. In addition, there were new, more economical engines with greater thrust. The aircraft’s unladen weight was reduced by four tonnes through the use of new materials.

    Just as with its predecessor model, the B707, Lufthansa Cargo required a freighter which would meet the demands of a growing market. In 1972 it arrived: once more the launch customer, Lufthansa put the freight version of the B747 into service — the first airline in the world to do so.

    The Boeing 747, the jumbo jet, evokes a greater emotional response than almost any other aircraft; among pilots and flight attendants as well as passengers. And that is something very special. After all, 3.6 billion people have now flown on a 747, equivalent to more than half the world’s population. Jumbo jets have been in the air for about 87.6 million flying hours, where the average flying time between two airports was six hours. Equally impressive is the total 77.7 billion kilometres covered by Boeing 747 aircraft; that corresponds to around 1.9 million circumnavigations of the globe. Worldwide 1,053 Boeing 747 are currently in service. Around 75,000 construction drawings were prepared before the first aircraft could be built from about six million components almost forty years ago.

    Joe Sutter clearly feels quite at home in the ‘aquarium’. “I make suggestions,” he remarks casually, narrowing his eyes a little as he speaks. “Sometimes they listen to me, sometimes they don’t.” Did he just wink at me? The ‘aquarium’ is actually a room overlooking the production hall at the Boeing plant that owes its nickname to its floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Joe Sutter probably likes spending time in the aquarium, because from here he can watch as a Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental takes shape below. The fact that the latest generation of the legendary jumbo jet is being produced here in Everett, near Seattle, has quite a lot to do with a suggestion the 90-year-old Mr. Sutter once made – and the fact that he was listened to. Joe Sutter is not only a member of the Senior Advisory Group at Boeing; he is the father of a legend. Back in the 1960s, he was the chief engineer responsible for building a aircraft of hitherto unheard-of dimensions.

    In fact, his giant baby was to set new standards, both as an airliner and as a cargo aircraft. The production schedule was breathtakingly tight: it dictated that the 747 be rolled out less than two-and-a-half years after the first technical drawings had been completed. It would be a Herculean task, but there was Herculean spirit in the air back then. Joe Sutter remembers: “The late sixties were a turbulent time, a bold period in US history. The 747 team was inspired by and filled with the same ‘can do’ attitude that put men on the moon.” Given the methods of the day, this kind of enthusiasm was absolutely crucial. “Think of the scale of the programme and then consider how such projects are approached nowadays,” Sutter adds. Instead of high-performance computers, he only had first-class engineers and, during the most intensive phase of the development programme, over 4,500 people on his team. To this day they are reverentially known as “The Incredibles” at Boeing – and justifiably so.

    After 29 months during which 75,000 technical drawings were completed and ten million working hours invested in its development, the first Boeing 747 rolled out of the assembly hangar at the Everett facility, which had been purpose-built for the construction of this new giant aircraft. The aircraft that slowly and majestically emerged from the hangar was nothing short of a revolution in aircraft construction. The four-jet, long-haul aircraft had twice the number of seats of any of its contemporaries, and its fuselage with the characteristic hump made it unmistakable. As far as safety was concerned, Joe Sutter had gone far beyond all standard requirements of the day. Only one question remained: how would this ultramodern giant perform in the air? That question was answered on 9 February, 1969, a historic day at the Boeing airfield in Everett. Joe Sutter remembers it well: “The clouds were bunched thickly but we elected to proceed because of a radio report from a 707 on a test flight over the Olympic Peninsula.”

    So hardly ideal conditions for the 747’s first test flight and Sutter grew increasingly tense as the time for take-off drew nearer. “There was no doubt in my mind that the 747 would fly; the only question was, how well?” It would be up to the “three W’s” in the cockpit, pilots Jack Waddell and Brien Wygle, and flight engineer Jess Wallick, to assess this. Only after they had gently touched down again and reported back were Sutter’s doubts dispelled. “In one and a quarter hours in the air, Waddell, Wygle and Wallick had learned that the 747 flew well, was stable and had light controls with well-balanced forces,” he recalls. The Boeing 747’s outstanding handling capabilities would very soon make it a favourite of pilots the world over. But the jumbo jet’s cost efficiency and safety were also excellent selling points. Lufthansa was the first European airline to operate the Boeing 747 on long-haul flights back in 1970. In the meantime, Boeing’s customers have taken delivery of more than 1400 jumbo jets of different types, each one an updated version of the last; and more than 3.5 billion passengers – the equivalent of half the world’s population – have travelled on board a 747.

    What began as a high-risk financial venture for Boeing became an economic success story. The enduring success of the Boeing 747 was possible only because its basic design was developed with the future in mind. As Joe Sutter says, “it has been able to absorb technology in every area – structure, aerodynamics, power plant, cockpit systems. It’s just as modern as any aircraft flying out there because Boeing has continued to invest in the product and the basic product was right, so the investment pays off.” When the father of the 747 looks down from the aquarium onto today’s jumbo production line, he sees his old, familiar aircraft and at the same time, one that is entirely new. “The 747-8 Intercontinental looks just like the original aircraft, except for the stretched upper deck. Technically, the new generation is far more advanced, of course, but the basic design has survived 40 years. It’s absolutely amazing and all I can say is: those guys working with me, they did the right thing.”

    But the man who got it right above all others was Joe Sutter, because he listened very carefully to Boeing’s airline customers right from the start. He has always maintained that “the most important thing in the early stages of a development programme is to ask questions. If you don’t understand what a customer wants, you won’t end up with a successful product.” Whereas Pan American World Airways was the driving force on the customer side for the original 747, it was Lufthansa that urged Boeing to develop the latest generation now scheduled to enter the airline’s service next year. Long before 2005, when Boeing decided to develop the new ‘Dash 8’ series, Lufthansa had specified that it was looking for a larger aircraft than the 747-400, one that should be more efficient, and technically and environmentally superior to the then current version. Once the 747-8 Intercontinental’s development programme was launched, the airline worked alongside Boeing to create an almost entirely new aircraft.

    So does Joe Sutter consider this kind of involvement mere meddling? Does it hurt his pride? On the contrary. “The best development results are born of dialogue with the customers,” he says. A man of his calibre has no time for petty jealousies or sensitivities; he is only interested in the end result. And the current version of ‘his’ 747 looks set to make history.

    “Isn’t she beautiful?” calls Danny from his perch above the jumbo jet. Danny has every reason to be up in the air – he’s a crane operator at the Boeing aircraft manufacturing plant in Everett, near Seattle. And Danny has every reason to rave as he looks down at a legend reborn, a brand-new 747-8 Intercontinental airliner on the floor of the hangar below him. More precisely: it is the first such aircraft that will be delivered to Lufthansa.
    The Boeing 747 is a phoenix whose powers of renewal are almost magical. The world’s largest airliner (in 1969) was enthusiastically received by both pilots and passengers when it took off on its maiden flight that year on February 9. The pilots were impressed by the 747’s revolutionary technology, its outstanding flight capabilities and its standard-setting safety features. Airline passengers, however, fell in love with the shape and appearance of the giant jet that could seat twice as many people as any other long-haul aircraft of the day. The feature that elicited this spontaneous outburst of affection was the hump that arched over the main passenger deck and contained the cockpit at the front. Hump? What an unattractive word for the graceful, sweeping silhouette that distinguishes the 747 from every other passenger aircraft in the world.

    Lufthansa recognised the jumbo jet’s potential for winning people’s hearts, but was even more interested in the new wide-bodied aircraft’s economic and engineering capacities — which explains why Lufthansa became the first European airline to operate a Boeing 747 on long-haul flights. In fact, the very first Lufthansa jumbo landed at Hamburg Airport on 30 March, 1970.

    Many variations of the Boeing 747 were built in the ensuing years. The 747-400 series, in particular, represented a huge evolutionary leap, and hundreds of these aircraft have been operating around the world since they first came out in 1989. Lufthansa has 30 Boeing 747-400s in its fleet. Each one seats 344 passengers and this model is also well loved by pilots and passengers alike. But even such a classic cannot escape the platitude that there’s nothing so good that it cannot be made better. Back in the 1960s, Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) was the driving force on the customer side behind the initial development of the Boeing 747. This time around it was Lufthansa that strongly urged Boeing to develop a brand-new passenger model. Nico Buchholz, Executive Vice-President Group Fleet Management at Lufthansa, made numerous trips to Everett to acquaint Boeing with just what Lufthansa was looking for.

    His powers of persuasion were evidently considerable, because the decision was finally made in 2005 to develop the 747-8 Intercontinental. As Boeing’s first customer, Lufthansa has ordered 20 of the new model. In doing so, it has once again positioned itself as a leading innovator in the international aviation industry.

    And once again, the airline has recognised the technical, economic and, in this case, also environmental advantages of the new aircraft. “The 747-8 is new – and at the same time, not new,” says Nico Buchholz. In other words, it brings to the Lufthansa fleet all the proven benefits of its predecessors, but takes quality to an even higher level in response to 21st century expectations. The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental is 76.3 metres long, 5.6 metres longer than the 747-400, and can seat 50 additional passengers, yet its performance is better and it consumes considerably less fuel.

    The new Jumbo's wing construction and its GEnx-2B67 engines, newly developed by GE Aviation, are primarily responsible for its comparatively low fuel consumption. In fact, the US manufacturer’s engines offer a second environmental benefit: although a powerful force to be reckoned with, they are relatively quiet. The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental’s noise emissions are significantly lower than those of preceding models and its so-called ‘noise footprint’, the area affected by noise pollution when an aircraft takes off, is much smaller too.

    However, the economic and environmental benefits of the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental are only part of the picture. For Lufthansa, the new aircraft is also a strategic asset. With seating for just under 400 passengers, the new Boeing closes the gap within the Lufthansa fleet between the Airbus A340-600 (which seats roughly 300) and the Boeing 747-400 on the one hand, and the Airbus A380-800 (which seats 526 long-haul passengers) on the other. And by operating different aircraft to match the capacity required, Lufthansa can respond even more precisely to customer needs. Not that such considerations are important to customers planning their travel. They are much more interested in an aircraft that is reliable, safe and comfortable. The reliability and safety of the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental have been checked exhaustively and uncompromisingly in numerous tests — through extreme flight manoeuvres, for example, which push the aircraft to its physical limits and which would never be carried out in normal service.

    Participation in the competition is possible during the period from 01.03.2013 to 30.06.2013, 24:00 hours (CET). To enter, the participant need register only once on the ‘Lufthansa 747-8 Air View’ website. The participant must also upload at least one of their own pictures to the gallery available on the website as part of the photo promotion. The winning photos will be chosen on the basis of the number of positive ratings (‘Likes’) given by all the participants; the final selection of the 10 winners will be made by Lufthansa.


    Each participant may enter only once. Entering on behalf of others or through an automated competition entry service is not permitted.

    The details provided by the participant (name, e-mail address or Facebook login) will be handled by Lufthansa in confidence and in accordance with data protection legislation and stored in connection with this competition.
